With the economy in such a colossal mess, high unemployment, America's continuing involvement in Iraq, balancing the budget, President Obama insisting that all Americans have access to affordable health care. Continuing to campaign on these promise with or without the help of Republicans, President Obama was backed in a corner.
Republicans had vowed to make Obama a one-term president. Their every action headed down the road of dismantlement. They viewed Barack Obama's presidency as a novelty. They mocked him. Daily, 24/7. The media, Republicans and pundits said he had four years on the national stage, and for that, he should be grateful, as should African Americans voters.
Talking heads on television and in the print media stated unequivocally that Black folks would not go to the polls like they did in 2008. They said Blacks are disappointed that President Obama ignored them after he was elected. None of these expert-driven talkers went into African American neighborhoods to record their opinions about President Obama and his "failure" to address their problems. White pundits and the media assumed that the handful of African American commentators on Fox represented African American voters.
When precincts closed and results were being broadcast it looked very good for candidate Mitt Romney. My heart started to sink. I was not happy with the prospect of living under a Romney presidency, but I would have no choice. If he won, I would accept it and move on. However, a slow traveling headache was gaining steam inside my head.
TV word vocalists with their fancy touch tone gadgets and charts were all saying President Obama could start packing his suitcases, and head on back to Chicago. Ann Romney could start making decoration plans. The suspense was thicker than a pair of bifocal eyeglasses.
Later in the evening the numbers and states began to change in favor of the President. At the end of a nail-biting evening, it was finally announced that President Obama had won his re-election bid. Big time! There was no doubt who had won. No questionable tie. No need for a recount. Mitt Romney had been roundly defeated by a sitting president. The goal to suppress and impede the spirit of African American voters failed miserably. Republicans complained and searched for someone to blame other than themselves. As they complained and whined the world celebrated with President Barack Obama.
One term Commander-in-Chief? Hardly! Thank you, Republicans.
Bush's former brain, Karl Rove, had a complete meltdown on Fox. He demanded that they recount the Ohio numbers, a state he swore Romney would win hands down. It was not supposed to happen. That's not what political experts, the media and polls predicted. Romney also believed he had Ohio. Rove's meltdown and his hand-held chalk board was a comedic classic! Despite not demanding a recount Romney still could not believe that Ohio went to the President.
Fox's Chris Wallace said to the doubters that refused to believe President Obama was the victor: "Well I have great respect for our decision desk, and I can see that they're very happy in Chicago, but I have to tell you that the Romney camp has real doubts by the call that has been made by us and by other networks. They do not believe that Ohio is in the Obama camp. I just got an email from a top Romney person. I asked, 'Do you agree with our call?' He said 'Not really. It's less than 20 percent of the vote still out in GOP areas.'"
Oh, well. Defeat is a bitter pill to swallow.
