Repulsed by one; enthralled by the other

(above) Presidential candidate Herman Cain

It is now way past common knowledge that Barack Obama is of mixed heritage. He has a White mother and a Black father from Kenya. He was raised by his late mother and White grandparents.

During Obama’s run for the presidency, he was demonized and scandalized by southern-raised yahoos. When he won the presidency, their open contempt flowed like a polluted river from one red state to the other. Monied organizations like Americans for Prosperity financed anti-Obama protests. Participants proudly displayed signs and banners communicating old school emotions and fanaticism.

Republicans were empowered by their own agenda and spirit of repulsion for Obama. Their pre-election animus boiled over, spilling into Obama’s presidency. They declared before the campaign began that Hillary Clinton would get the Democratic nomination; Rudy Giuliani would get the Republican nomination. Giuliani was favored to win the presidency against Clinton. Pollsters and the media predicted he would prance to victory. In the meanwhile, the
media complex and prognosticators treated Obama like a sideshow that would be laughed off the national stage in 2008.

Herman Cain, on the other hand, in 2011, has a devoted following among the same people that loathe Obama. Inasmuch as Cain is not garnering love from the majority of elected Republicans, a few of them are not in his corner. But they pretend to be in public. Republican rivals who bash Cain have been measured in their language and criticism. They do not want to alienate his supporters, most of whom belong to the Tea Party club, and are vocal in their dislike of President Obama.

At a recent Americans for Prosperity Foundation conference in Washington, Cain got thunderous approval when he introduced himself as "the Koch brothers' brother from another mother."  Nothing original but his supporters ate it up.

Charles and David Koch are multi-billionaires who  are buying politicians and the offices they want them to win. By the way, Cain lifted that “brother from another mother” line from Rush Hour 1,  delivered by actor/comedian Chris Tucker. Another by the way--the Koch brothers will not be spending millions of dollars on Cain's campaign. They know he will not get the nomination. Tea party support for Cain will falter before election day.

This week Cain mentioned Bill Ayers in the midst of a speech. Ayers is a favorite bogeyman for Republican candidates.  In 2008 the GOP used Ayers like a pin cushion, hoping to needle punch the air out of Obama’s candidacy.  I suspect Cain will rehash this old and trite tactics, using  Ayers, Rev. Wright, Obama’s birth certificate and legal citizenship to appease his base.

As an African American who follows Herman Cain’s candidacy, I see the historical aspect of his running to defeat a sitting president, who is Black. We have never had that happen in America, and it will probably be many more decades to come before it happens again. Despite Obama being a historical first in America, I  do not think Cain will become the second Black president. He confirms my observations each time he participates in the Republican's debates. I sense that he is controlling and short-tempered. He has a mean streak that cameras cannot hide.

There is an old adage that says, “seek and ye shall find.”  After a couple of hours of searching the Internet I found my answer  on the
American Thinker, where I read an article titled “10 Reasons to  Support Herman Cain for President” by C. Edmund Wright, July 18, 2011.

Wright wrote that the number one reason for electing Cain is: “It opens the door to a ticket of Cain and Haley Barbour in some order.  OK, maybe this is not earthshaking, but imagine the 'racist Republican Party' putting forth a national ticket including a drawlin' Mississippi good ol' boy and a black businessman who still speaks a smidgen of Ebonics.”

Wright cleared up the hate Obama, love Cain question. His number 10 reason for electing Cain dealt with race. He wrote: “A Cain candidacy not only takes the race card off the table -- it might in fact put it in the Republicans' camp.  Frankly, Cain is 'blacker' than Obama in every way imaginable.  He does not have a white parent.

"He has a slight black dialect and does not ‘turn it off’ to impress Harry Reid or Joe Biden, nor does he ‘amp it up’ to impress Jeremiah Wright. As Obama's presidency has shown, America did not need a black president. What America needs is to just get over the race thing, period.  Cain is over it, and I bet he would flat-out tell Obama to get over it, too.”

Cain says president making mistake telling the enemy when the withdrawl begins

Herman Cain
Frontrunner Herman Cain did not write a press release, but that may be a good thing. It might have been more confusing than his 9-9-9 tax plan. He misunderstood his own plan. He it changed to 9-0-9. I heard him explain it but I am still confused.

Watching Cain, I sense he thinks he is the smartest person in the room, and everyone has to defer to him. To get the votes and support of the Tea Party, Cain has shown that he will pander and say whatever is necessary to achieve his political goals.

Cain is a nonstop critic of President Obama. He said he would run circles around him in a foreign policy debate. I would pay to see that!  In a debate with President Obama, Cain would get whipped so fast he wouldn't realize he's been hit by lightning speed intelligence.

Cain's cryptic statement on troop withdrawal from Iraq was made in the midst of his campaign. It reveals how short-sighted he is when it comes to a complex subject like foreign policy.

"Whether or not it's the right thing to do, I would consult with the commanders. The thing that I wouldn't do that the president is doing, is telling the enemy how many troops you gonna bring out and when you gonna bring 'em out. I believe that our time there was worth it, but I would not have announced this big drawdown, tell the enemy so now they're going to basically position themselves."

That's it?

Religious hogwash, Republicans and when God comes calling on candidates

Republicans are hoping to make President Obama a one-term president. The two top contenders this week hoping to unseat him are Herman Cain and Mitt Romney. In contention are six other candidates striving to knock each other out of the ring.

Herman Cain
Mitt Romney

With this crop of Republican candidates, it is not surprising to hear that God contacted them, telling them to run for president. When Republican George Bush campaigned for his father, George W. H. Bush, the younger Bush zeroed in on the weaknesses of evangelical Christians. He realized that if he confessed to being born again, and his devoted love for God, he had a good chance of gaining their votes and support. Christianity was the key to his presidential victory whenever he decided to run for president.

By the time Bush was ready to advance from governor of Texas to president of the U. S., he and Karl Rove, his campaign manager, had the born-again-Christian rhetoric solidly packed in a suitcase and ready to travel.

Did God’s personal persuasion influence him? Yes, according to Bush, “I’ve heard the call. I believe God wants me to run for president.”

His religious language of salvation and redemption worked like a lucky charm on God fearing Christians. They opened their arms and wallets, allowing Bush to bask in the glory of their “righteous godliness.”

However, God did not tell Republican Mitt Romney to run for president. The Mormon candidate said he already knows God’s purpose for America. Taking a swipe at President Obama, Romney said God did not create this country to be a nation of followers. America is destined to be one of several equally balanced global powers.

Silly me. Here I am thinking America is a global power, unequal to any other country.

Every time I hear Romney talk I cannot help but think about the fast talking con artist Robert Preston in The Music Man.

With this crop of God chosen Christians vying for America’s top job, God’s ears must be on fire, they invoke his name so often. Thus far, Jon Huntsman, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich have not lingered on their religion, nor have they confessed to getting a notification from God. When novice Republican Herman Cain ran for president in 2000, and for the Georgia senate seat vacated by Democrat Zell Miller in 2004, he did not say God contacted him.

At a town hall meeting in 1994 Cain debated President Bill Clinton on the economic impact of government run health care. Cain informed the President that his facts were wrong, and he would be happy to debate him again when he (Clinton) checked his facts. Cain arrogantly assumed that he was important enough to warrant a second town hall debate with President Clinton.

In the meanwhile, as Cain pondered a second run for president in 2011, God popped up and told him to go for it. God even spoke to him through his granddaughter. In an October interview with Christian Broadcast News, he compared himself to Moses. Cain said, “God’s been in this from the beginning.” Like Moses, Cain thought God made a mistake, encouraging him to run for president.

Moses did not feel qualified for the task God was about to give him. He did not feel qualified to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt to freedom. McCain said to God, “You’ve got the wrong person. You can’t be talking about me.” He finally gave in to God’s order.

In 2000 McCain was one of the candidates running against George Bush. He explained the reason he lost “was more about making a point than winning. George W. Bush was the chosen one. He had the campaign DNA that followers looked for. I believe that I had a better message, and I believe that I was the better messenger. I did not start soon enough".

I think this is the reason I cringe and yell at my TV when pundits and John McCain say he is a political neophyte. A brief presidential run in 2000, a senate race in 2004, and a town hall debate with the president of the United States. A newcomer on the scene? I don’t think so!

In May the spouse of Republican Rick Santorum, Karen Santorum talked with David Brody on CBN. She told him that Santorum made up his mind to run for president because "it really boils down to God's will. What is it that God wants"?

The Santorums’ prayed and prayed and God finally revealed the answer they were waiting for. “We believe with all our hearts that this is what God wants".

Is God a staunch Republican? I ask that for a reason. Not only has God conversed with Republican candidates, but he also visited Tim Pawlenty’s campaign manager, Nick Ayers. He said working for Pawlenty was a calling. He had been pondering the God-sanctioned possibility for six months or so.

According to a Talking Points Memo (TPM) article, Ayers said, “. . . I have deeply thought about my purpose in life, and how to best utilize the talents God has given me. I wanted my decision to be wholly about how best to serve Him". Ayers, a Republican, said he can best serve God by acting as campaign manager for Pawlenty, who has since dropped out of the presidential race due to poor support and financial problems.

Here is my understanding about God: If he truly has his hands on an individual he has selected to perform a task, he will not leave that person stranded without a plan to achieve the assignment. Too many times politicians and preachers say God called them. I am going to step out of my naive mode, and say the voice they heard was not God. It was their own egos trying to mimic God.

Republican candidate Michele Bachmann caused many a female's mouths to fly open when she said she was obedient to her husband! Being a good Christian woman, she willingly follows the Bible’s teaching. It was her husband, Marcus, who decided that she should get an advanced degree in tax law, run for the senate, and then for president.

When she was contemplating a presidential run, she revealed it was a joint decision. “My husband and I took three days, and we fasted and we prayed. And we prayed, ‘Lord, is this what you want? Are you sure? Is this your will?", Bachmann said, speaking at the Minnesota’s World Christian Center.

Bachmann had told World Net Daily that she would run for president if God told her to do it. “I will not seek a higher office if God is not calling me to do it. If I am called to serve in that realm I would serve, but if I am not called, I wouldn’t do it".

So with her husband and God giving her a thumbs up, Bachmann is now fully engaged in the race. She started out like a grey hound, but she has slowed down to a turtle’s pace. Like Pawlenty, her donation (funds) well is drying up.

Gov. Slick Rick Perry
I saved the longest God touched candidate for last. I like to call him Gov. Slick Rick Perry of Texas. I am a Texan and I feel I know from whence I speak, like the time Slick Rick asked Texans to pray for rain after a couple of bone dry summers. Below is a rain proclamation signed by the governor:

WHEREAS, the state of Texas is in the midst of an exceptional drought, with some parts of the state receiving no significant rainfall for almost three months, matching rainfall deficit records dating back to the 1930s … NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICK PERRY, Governor of Texas, under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statutes of the State of Texas, do hereby proclaim the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas. I urge Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers on that day for the healing of our land, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of our normal way of life.

Texas is still bone dry and thirsty for rain Texas was recently devastated by brush fires that destroyed homes, businesses and other properties.

And then Slick Rick announced that he is a prophet! This bag of used kitty litter was more than my nose was willing to smell. I had no idea our good governor was psychic! The media and pundits have praised Slick Rick like he is the time bomb waiting to blow up President Obama’s chances at a second term. We’ll see how potent he is if he wins the Republican nomination.

Actually, Slick Rick was not too sure about running for president until God whispered in his ear. He told an Iowa newspaper: “I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in, but I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs".

After he made his grand announcement to run, supporters, pundits of all stripes and the media bet that Slick Rick would knock nothing but home runs when debating his opponents during the Republican primary. The anticipated home runs did not happen. Romney did not give him time to catch his breath. Slick Rick had to feel like a small rabbit caught in a trap.

You see, Gov. Slick Rick Perry is not a think-on-your-feet debater. He did not debate when he campaigned for re-election in Texas. Everybody in his entourage of advisers were comfortable with him not debating. He made excuses for himself, and made demands of his opponent. Too bad his camp did not learn that a Texas stage is much, much smaller than a national stage. Slick Rick proved that he is not ready for prime time.

Anita Perry feels her husband is being persecuted because of his faith. She talked about a “burning bush.”  I do believe she was stepping into Moses’ territory! He was the only one that God allowed to see the burning bush. In the movie, The Ten Commandments, Moses walked down from the mountain an aged man with white hair. Slick Rick's hair has not grayed.

Anita Perry said October 13, to supporters at North Greenville University, “We’ve been brutalized, eaten up and chewed up in the press . . . After Rick had won being elected for the governorship for the third time in Texas, there was a nagging, a pulling at my heart for him to run for president. You know what we have no leadership in Washington. We have nobody to guide our country.

“God was already speaking to him, but he didn’t want to hear it. He felt like he needed to see the burning bush. I said, ‘Look, let me tell you something. You may not see that burning bush but there are people who see that burning bush for you.’ So he truly felt like he was called to do this. We still feel called to do this. We are being brutalized by our opponents in our own party. So much of that is, I think they look at him because of his faith".

Slick Rick is not being attacked, Anita. The attack is his poor debate performances. He brags about a plan to put Americans back to work, and then reveals a scheme to fatten the pockets of the rich. Maybe Slick Rick Perry should have another talk with God, and ask for a plan of victory in 2012.

***UPDATE: As of Wednesday (Oct. 19) the media and pundits have concluded that Herman Cain is still ahead in the polls, with Mitt Romney and Rick Perry following behind him. However, the same media and pundits have begun to treat Cain like a joke, saying he does not have a chance to win the Republican nomination for president. One pundit, Ed Rollins, said Republicans would be fools to nominate Cain.

The media, pundits never take Black presidential candidates seriously

  Frederick Douglass
Many firsts for African  Americans

Despite Democrat Barack Obama nailing the 2008 presidential election, he was not the first African American to run for the office. I heard numerous times that Abraham Lincoln was a Black man. It was rumored there were plans to exhume his body to conduct a DNA test.

What if tests were conducted, and it was discovered that Lincoln is actually Black? Would the results get published by the America media? Probably not. All that hero worship would have been erased from history books, and from the mouths of politicians who love to cite him. Nevertheless, the thought is fun to entertain.  Imagine that! Ol' Honest Abe got away with "passing" for White!

Imagination is a terrible thing to waste. But I digress.

In 1872 Victoria Woodhull and members of the newly formed Equal Rights Party picked Frederick Douglass--orator, statesman and social reformer--to be her vice president. Woodhull was nominated by the Equal Rights Party. Douglass did not know that he had been designated; therefore, he did not accept the nomination.

White people, who did not cotton well to race mixing on any level, were upset at the prospect of this White woman and Black man working together. Oddly, Woodhull's name was not printed on the ballot. Douglass went on to serve as a presidential elector in the United States Electoral College for the city of New York.

June 19, 1888 Frederick Douglass delivered a speech at the National Republican Convention in Chicago. He reminded Republicans and delegates that they should fight for the rights of Black Civil War veterans, who were being denied the right to vote in southern states.

Amid his speech Douglass said, “When your army was melting away before the fire and pestilence of rebellion, when your star-spangled banner trailed in the dust heavy with blood, you called the Negro. And he came 200,000 strong! Let us remember that these brave Black men are now stripped of their right to vote. Do not leave them to wade through blood to the ballot box. Make their pathway to the ballot box as smooth and safe as that of any class of citizens.” (The Frederick Douglass Foundation of New York)

Shirley Chisholm makes a run for the presidency

Abraham Lincoln aside, and the prospect of Democrat Shirley Chisholm running for president was a first for African American
1972 Pres. Candidate Shirley Chisholm
women.  The year was 1972. Jesse Jackson ran in 1984 and 1988; Republican Alan Keyes ran for president several times: 1992, 19996, 2000 and 2008. He ran for the Senate against Barack Obama in Chicago. Carol Mosley Braun and Al Sharpton were also presidential candidates in 2004.

Chisholm campaigned in 12 states, winning Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey. She lost the nomination to George McGovern at the Democratic Convention held in Miami Beach, Florida. McGovern's opponent, Hubert H. Humprey, turned over his African American delegates to Chisholm, giving her a total of 152 delegates.

Chisholm was a former educator. She was the first Black woman to run for Congress, winning office in 1969, representing New York's 12th Congressional District. She served seven terms. Chisholm once said, "Of my two handicaps, being female puts more obstacles in my path than being Black".

Getting into the presidential race, her campaign slogan was "Bring U.S. Together. Vote Chisholm 1972. Unbought. Unbossed."

She had thought about running in 1971 but stepped away from the idea for a year. In 1972 Chisholm announced her decision at a Baptist church that she frequented in the district she represented. She told who attended: "I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am Black and proud of that. I am not the candidate of the women's movement of the country. I am the candidate of the people and my presence before you symbolizes a new era in American political history". Chislom did not have the funds to sustain a long campaign. She was the first woman to participate in a presidential debate.

Tea Party uses candidate Herman Cain skin color
to prove they are not racist

One of the Tea Party favorite candidates for the presidency is a Republican businessman Republican named Herman Cain. The Tea Party is predominately comprised of White males and females. Minorities are hard to spot at their conferences, town hall meetings and protests. As a Black man, who owns a Domino Pizza franchise, Cain have made statements that lingered on the edge of racism and self-hate. He sometimes demonstrated that he is a first-class panderer. He played his role like a professional minstrel man.

The Tea Party utilized Cain's skin color to verify that they are not racist. He was lulled into believing that he was their morning star. He believed they would help him get the nomination over his White opponents.

Cain's White supporters, on the other hands, despised President Barack Obama, an African America. First Lady Michelle Obama was equally hated by them. Tea Party members, when in front of the TV cameras, declared that Herman Cain is more like them than Obama! Cain is a dark skin man; too dark to pass for White. The real differences are that Cain is buffoonish. President Obama, on the other hand, is mature, cool, calm, collected and has a firm grasp on the world of politics, the Constitution and history.
Former candidates Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton

As with prior candidates of color the media and pundits were amused by their audacity to run for president of the United States. Black candidates were ridiculed and made fun of.  Anyone who watched the Democratic primaries, Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988) and Al Sharpton (2004), clearly saw that they won the debates.

White competitors felt free to rake each other over hot coals, throwing out corny jokes rather than talk seriously about issues of interest to voters.  Jackson and Sharpton had to be serious 99.9 percent of the time when they campaigned and took part in debates.

Republican Allan Keys, an African American candidate from Chicago, ran for president several times:  1992, 1996, 2000 and 1988. In 2004 Carol Moseley Braun, D-Chicago, sought the Democratic nomination. She withdrew from the presidential race prior to the start of Iowa caucuses. She had the distinction of being the first Black woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 1999. She was a Congresswoman prior to getting elected to the Senate.

Vilified by the media: Candidates Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton

Both Jackson and Sharpton were vilified and treated like wayward children by the media and pundits. They were labeled "race hustlers", "race pimps" and "race baiters", and deemed unfit to be president of the United States. Some of their critics even called them buffoons and clowns. None of these labels were plastered on the backs of White candidates.

1988 Jesse Jackson supporters at a rally
On April 6, 1988, The Nation wrote: "Jesse Jackson is a serious candidate for the presidency. He was always serious; it was just the political scientists and the other politicians who belittled his campaign, trivialized his efforts. and disdained his prospects.

"Despite the contempt and condescension of the media--or perhaps because of it--Jackson went to the most remote and isolated grass roots in the American social landscape to find the strength for a campaign that has already begun to transform politics.

"The enormous energy that his campaign releases has created a new populist moment, overtaking the languid hours and dull days of conventional politics and imagining possibilities for substantial change beyond the usual incremental transactions of the two-party system.

"It offers hope against cynicism, power against prejudice and solidarity against division. It is the specific antithesis to Reaganism and reaction, which, with the shameful acquiescence of the Democratic center, have held America in their thrall for most of this decade and which must now be defeated. For that reason, The Nation is endorsing Jesse Jackson for the Democratic nomination for President."

April 16, 2004, CNN---"Controversial, conversational and confrontational, the Rev. Alfred
Charles Sharpton Jr. staged a colorful but ultimately unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign on a platform of racial equality, education and health care rights.
President candidate Rev. Al Sharpton

"The longtime activist ended his bid at the Democratic nomination on March 15, 2004, conceding defeat to Sen. John Kerry but pledging to continue campaigning for his 'urban agenda.'

"The outcome was predictable, according to analysts who said Sharpton would have difficulty overcoming his political inexperience and limited appeal before becoming a top White House contender. Sharpton's reputation would seem to work against any challenger for the presidency, said CNN political analyst William Schneider. 'He's seen as divisive, contentious, confrontational,' Schneider said, 'all the things the Democrats don't really need."'

Jesse Jackson was schedule to speak at the Democratic Convention. He has been accused of making an anti-Semitic statement while campaigning. Jackson addressed the incident in his speech. It was so soul stirring and emotional, there were few dry eyes in the convention center. Al Sharpton spoke at 2004 convention.

Barack Obama's chance of winning the presidency

When candidate Barack Obama sailed through the campaign storm unscathed, the media and crystal ball pundits were dumbfounded. Hillary Clinton had been automatically cast as the Democratic nominee by the media, womens' organizations, bloggers, politicians and pundits.

Republican Rudy Giuliani, mayor of New York, was the preordained Republican nominee. The final showdown was supposed to be between him and Hillary Clinton. Giuliani, nicknamed "America's Mayor" by the media after the September 11 tragedy, fizzled before the primaries began. He campaigned on his actions after the September 11, 2001, terrorists attack in New York, where the Twin Towers were stuck by planes highjacked by 18 Middle East terrorists. Democrat Joe Biden said during a debate that Giuliani's campaign consisted of "a noun, a verb and 9/11".

Realizing that Obama was actually an earnest candidate with a good chance of winning the presidency, the media shifted into high gear, driving up their single themed message created to marginalize this young and handsome Black candidate from Chicago.

They relied on skewed polls, fact-challenged opinions and "news" stories to prove their assertions. They pushed unsubstantiated scandals and gossipy tales initiated by Sean Hannity on Fox TV. Barack Obama was even accused of being a homosexual. Hannity promoted on his Fox show that he had found a man who said he had an affair with Obama, and regularly partook in drugs. Critics talked about the way Obama talked. The way he walked (with swag). The way he spoke perfect English, no use of slang and broken English.

It was Hannity who started the ball rolling regarding a Sunday sermon delivered by Obama's minster Rev. Jeremiah Wright. An edited except from one sermon took a life of its own. Wright made the statement "God damns America", Hannity changed the meaning, suggesting that Rev. Wright said "goddman America"! The media and pundits followed Fox's lead. The lie was the perfect bumper sticker slogan for Obama haters. They did not take time to read a transcript of the sermon.

Hell broke loose, but Satan's fire could not burn down Barack Obama's campaign. Every sermon ever preached by Rev. Wright was suddenly scrutinized by the media and Hannity. They even went after Michelle Obama, reading her college thesis, talking to some of the White students that went to college with her.

The media and Hannity were on a fevered hunt, searching for something scandalous prior to Obama running for president. The lies flowed like salmon swimming upstream. None of the lies and twisted words stuck. Unfortunately, candidate Obama broke ties with Rev. Wright, severing their 20-year association and friendship.

Herman Cain's dream was pulled to the curb by a sexual scandal

The same media animosity towards Cain eventually took hold of his campaign. The media uncovered a sexual scandal in his past. While he was president of the National Restaurant Association two White females said he sexually harassed them. They were paid undisclosed amounts of money that was included in their severance packages. One woman, married, came forward and told her story. Cain's campaign went downhill after that. Both women disappeared from sight.

David Weigel, writer with The Slate, wrote 12/2011: "Amazingly, in the first weeks of the scandal, conservatives largely stuck by Cain. As it released its newest poll showing Cain collapsing back to single digits, the Des Moines Register noted that Cain weathered the harassment scandals. What did him in was sloppiness in how he responded to those stories and how he bumbled other ones.

"But none of that should have been surprising. When I first interviewed Cain in December 2010, I asked him for some details on how he'd wind down the war in Afghanistan. 'The first thing that I'd do [if elected]," he said, "is summon the experts to find out can we win.' The experts dodge became part of his answer to every serious foreign policy question. Why did it take until November to catch up with him? And what exactly was he adding to the race -- what was King thanking him for"?

The Week magazine wrote six reasons Cain was not electable, predicting his candidacy would fail. The reasons listed did not apply to the White candidates.

1. Presidential campaigns are no place for amateurs.
2. GOP wants a positive message.
3. GOP voters don't really want an outsider.
4. It's awfully tough to escape a juicy sexual scandal.
5. Candidates can succeed by keeping it simple.
6. Republicans should be wary of 'baggage'.

Herman Cain also raised the ire of Vanity Fair contributing editor James Wolcott, who wrote May 21 that, "Herman Cain sure has some steep gall copycatting Martin Luther King’s most famous rhetorical crescendo to trumpet his vain, grinny, substance-free candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. Cain, pounding his fist on the podium, is confident that he will be president in 2013".

It's more than hard to believe this writer is furious about Cain imitating Martin Luther King. I'm not buying the taint cheese Wolcott is selling. He is daring Cain to have to gall to run for president of the United States! Cain was not the only Republican candidate who has a "substance-free candidacy." Wolcott did not talk about any of them in his article. The Republican primary candidates are showing that all of them are substance-free.

Candidate Herman Cain
Historic election: A first for America

Wiley Online Library, in writing about African Americans and the presidency, states: “The historic election of Barack Obama as the first African American president of the United States brought issues of race to the center of the American political process. During the campaign, media reports were replete with discussions about the effects that hidden racial bias might have on the election.

"One of the most frequently mentioned concerns was the so-called Bradley effect, whereby 'White voters openly express support for a Black candidate but then fail to vote for the candidate in the privacy of the voting booth.

"An AP–Yahoo News poll conducted shortly before the 2008 election raised concerns that racial bias might cost Obama the victory in a close contest, as negative stereotypes of Blacks as 'lazy' and 'violent' were endorsed by one-third of White Democrats. Although Obama won a decisive victory, the effects of underlying racial biases may have been mitigated by other pressing factors weighing on the minds of the voting public, especially the mounting economic crisis".

On Sunday’s Face the Nation, June 26, it might have been a deliberate oversight, or maybe host Bob Schieffer just forgot that Herman Cain is running for president. Discussing a presidential straw poll, Schieffer described Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney as front runners. He mentioned Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, who garnered seven percent of the vote and Tim Pawlenty, six percent. Photos of these five candidates were shown.  Herman Cain was not mentioned nor was a photo of him shown.

A poll was conducted June 19-22, contacted 400 “likely” Republican voters. Schieffer decided to eliminate Cain from the presidential race for reasons only he can explain. In my mind, he overlooked Cain because he does not take him seriously. Schieffer did not think candidate Barack Obama had a chance of winning the presidency, either. He admitted that he voted for John McCain, a frequent guest on his Sunday morning show.

The Des Moines Register, June 25, wrote: “The poll shows that Mr. Romney and Ms. Bachmann leads the crowded Republican field. Mr. Romney received 23 percent of support, while Ms. Bachmann received 22 percent . . .  Among the most surprising results was former Godfather’s CEO Herman Cain, who received 10 percent of support.”

Translation: The newspaper expressed surprise that Herman Cain is on the same highway with the other candidates, all of whom are White males and one White female. The media are deciding who will be viable candidates, an idea it will pound into the heads of voters and potential voters. The subliminal message is to erase the Black guy from your mind.
